Meet the panel
Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM
Karyn needs no introduction in racing circles, being one of the leaders of the impressive operation that is Te Akau Racing. Her professional background boasts an extensive corporate career in the PR and communications' field. She has also had an inspiring career in both broadcasting and racing, being one of Trackside’s inaugural presenters, winning global awards for public speaking and still taking on select hosting duties to this day in addition to her role with Te Akau. A former World President of Junior Chamber International (JCI/Jaycees), she was awarded with an MNZM (Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit) in the 2014 New Year Queen’s Honours’ List for services to the community, to the Arts, and to racing.
Vicki joins our panel as someone who married into the ‘industry’ and has developed a passion for all things racing and breeding. An expert in juggling the demands of a family business (especially the all-consuming nature of a thoroughbred stud farm) as well raising two children, Vicki is also known for her impeccable racewear looks (how she has the time we’ll never know!). Vicki is married to Mark Baker, who owns and runs Hallmark Stud with his parents, Denny and Lyn. Internationally, Hallmark Stud has a reputation as an impressive, boutique thoroughbred nursery and can lay claim to graduates such as Katie Lee, Humidor and more recently, Bonny Lass and Self Obsession.
Carena joins our panel as a woman that wears many hats. She’s an Auckland Thoroughbred Racing ambassador and a regular on our racewear judging panels, as well as being an incredibly successful competitor herself across Australasia - even taking out VRC’s 2019 Myer Fashions on the Field National Final. In her professional life, she’s one half of the sister duo who founded Clique Fitness - an activewear brand with quite the cult following. Never content to let opportunities pass her by, she’s recently founded another business, PUPP, too. All this and she has a wee one at home, plus horses of both the sporthorse and racing persuasion.
Kelly Myers needs no introduction in racing circles having ridden over 600 winners including 27 Group and Listed winners over her career as a jockey. Kelly began her racing career riding trackwork whilst she completed her BSC in Human Nutrition and a Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching. She soon realised riding was where her passion lay and in her first full season of riding was named Champion Apprentice. Her lifelong love of horses has seen her dedicate many hours to the industry and even now, despite retiring from the riding ranks and now juggling family life with a career, she has combined her teaching and racing knowledge to be NZTR’s Northern Apprentice School Tutor.
Meet the MC
With our panel announced (and what a group of women!), we’re excited to announce that our MC for the day is Caitlin O’Sullivan. As a digital marketing specialist for LOVERACING.NZ, and the face of much of their on and offcourse content, she’ll be familiar to many of you. Add to that her racing ‘lineage’ (her grandfather is Dave O’Sullivan and her father is Lance O’Sullivan), and you could say she’s been a raceday regular since before she could walk.
An accomplished horsewoman in her own right, she competed in showing and dressage at a national level for over 10 years before focussing on her career. In addition to her LOVERACING.NZ role, she’s actively invovled in the digital marketing for Wexford Stable (and claims the number 1 fan title of the 2 x Vodafone New Zealand Derby winning stable), and has recently added a further side hustle to her repertoire, assisting some of New Zealand’s smaller racing clubs with their marketing too.
