HOW TO: Place a bet

While placing a bet at the races isn't something you have to do, having a dollar or two on a horse can certainly add to the fun of the day - whether you come home with a heavier wallet or not. Today we briefly explain the basic bet types to help you work out how to place your own bet at the races.

Win

You win the 'win dividend' if your chosen horse wins.

  • If you spend $1 on a horse to win and it wins, you'll take home x1 of the win dividend

  • If you spend $2, you'll win x2 the dividend... and so on

Place

You win the 'place dividend' if your chosen horse gets 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

  • If you spend $1 on a horse to place and it places, you'll take home x1 of the place dividend

  • If you spend $2, you'll win x2 the dividend... and so on

Each way

A combination of a win and place bet, you win:

  • The 'win AND place dividend' if your chosen horse wins

  • The 'place dividend' if your horse finishes 2nd or 3rd

  • A $1 each way bet will cost you $2 ($1 to win; $1 to place)

  • A $2 each way bet will cost you $4 ($2 to win; $2 to place)... and so on

Quinella

You win the 'quinella dividend' if your chosen horses get 1st and 2nd in either order.

  • Picking two horses (one must win and the other must get second) will cost you $1

  • If you spend $2 on that combination of horses, you'll get x2 the quinella dividend

Our tip here is to 'hedge' your bets and add another horse or two into your pool. This is called a 'boxed quinella'. If any two finish 1st and 2nd, you'll get the quinella dividend.

  • Picking three horses (two of which need to get 1st and 2nd) will cost you $3

  • Picking four horses will cost you $6

Trifecta

You win the 'trifecta' dividend if your chosen horses get 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Our tip here is to go for a 'boxed trifecta' meaning you win if your chosen horses get 1st, 2nd and 3rd in any order.

  • Boxing three horses (all need to finish in the top three) will cost you $6

  • Boxing four horses (three need to finish in the top three) will cost you $24
